I think he ends up in EDM or DET by the sounds of it.

whether this is true or not, congrats to EDM for overcoming their... ummm... geographical disability, and being in the conversation for young free agents.. I'll admit I was shocked when schultz went there, so the front office is doing something right

Come come now, every team plays an absolute stinker once in a while. As I said in my previous blog, the Oilers are a work in progress. Adding DeKeyser solves a problem for us.

Most college UFA's are, but every GM loves a free prospect with some upside so there's tons of interest and then with that comes the hype. There's some depth guys in the NHL right now that that were pretty hyped as college FA's.

I wouldn't really pat management on the back... I'm sure the only reason Schultz came here was because he knew our D sucked and he'd get ice-time.

Who's the last big college free agent to make a splash in the NHL within five years of being signed? Just wondering.

maybe... but with his talent he would have made most teams top 6 and worked his way into a top 4 slot. and he could have done it on a potential cup competitor. he would be top 4 in detroit and have been on a good team. he could have been making break out passed to crosby/malkin. he could have stayed in sunny cali. point is front ofiice pulled out all the stops and reeled him in

Sooooo if he signs before the deadline, do the Oil move whitney this year, or keep him and try to make the playoffs???

True, but he was originally drafted somewhat high by the Ducks.

Off topic but since I believe the Oilers have the best prospects by far in the NHL so I figured I'd throw this out here....

I came across a cool Twitter page called NHL Young Guns Daily (@YoungGunsDaily) and they give pretty good prospect reports for players that have already been drafted....Vincent Trocheck (who the panthers drafted) was compared to Sam Gagner...you guys think that is a good comparison?

If he signs before the deadline, I think both Smid and Whitney are gone. Oilers can go the rest of the season with J.Schultz, Petry, DeKeyser, Fistric, N.Schultz, and Potter. Keep in mind after last night, the playoffs are not very likely for the Oilers this season and the push will be on to move certain players in an effort to prepare the Oilers cap position for the draft and summer free agency.

Not a fan of moving smid. I honestly think he is a guy they need moving forward as an older presence and someone who is a warrior and can seriously help them when they make the playoffs. As for Whitney, Bon Voyage (frank)er.

The guy is overrated. 90% of hockey fans haven't even heard of him until this week.

Hard to say, unless you're someone who really follows college hockey and has seen him play. Odds are that he is overhyped a bit, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have some good upside or can't be a good depth player in the NHL. If anyone is expecting him to be a top pairing guy or has him as a lock as a top 4 d-man in the NHL then there's a decent chance that they'll be disappointed based off of most college UFA's in the past and McKenzie saying that this college FA class isn't very strong.
